Today we have an episode called my best friend's older brother works at licorice pizza. Before social media or the internet, your local record store was a perfect place to find out about the best music and shows. This episode is a love letter to them. Here we're going to play the best songs from them. And now we're gonna talk about our favorite record stores all over the world like in Seattle at Easy Street records or jive time in Portland at jackpot or Mississippi records in LA and Amoeba licorice pizza Tower Records in San Francisco and Amoeba or tower there Newport Beach and pier records. San Diego's Lu blues records are off the records. Then the Scotland Groucho records, London's Rough Trade, Virgin or sister Ray. In New York City sounds vinyl mania or Bleecker Bob's, these are great record stores. Not everyone in that list still exist today. I want to emphasize how important it is to be supportive of these independent businesses because they are so important to our existence. Right? I'm going to tell you a little story about when I was a kid and I walked into a record store in Southern California called licorice pizza. I'd walk in and see these big signs over sections of records. It would say rock or jazz or classical or country. And then back in the left hand corner there was a big sign that said alternative. Alternative Rock also called our alternative music or Alt rock or simply alternative is a category of music that emerged from the independent music and underground of the 70s and became wildly popular in the 90s. Alternative refers to the genres distinction from the mainstream or commercial rock and pop music, the term originally meaning broader are referring to a generation of musicians who unified their collective debt to either the musical style or simply the independent DIY ethos of punk rock, which in the late 70s groundwork, which in the late 70s really laid the groundwork for alternative music. Then later on in September 1988. Billboard even introduced alternative into their charting system to reflect the rise of the format across radio stations in the United States. stations like Cara q FM in Los Angeles, and WD r FM in New York, which are playing music from the underground, independent and non commercial rock artist. The genre can be found as early as the 60s with bands such as the Velvet Underground and other artists, and continue to evolve alternative rock through the 80s. Traditionally, alternative alternative rock broadly consisted of music that differ greatly in terms of sound, social context, and regional routes through the 80s magazines and ziens college radio airplay, and word of mouth had increased the predominance and highlighted the diversity of alternative rock and music, helping to define a number of distinctive distinctive styles and musical scenes, such as noise, pop, indie, rock, grunge and shoegaze. Remember, remember, before social media or the internet, your local record store was really the perfect place to find out about all of these sort of things. And we're going to start things off with a great song from the bonzo dog band. And then we're gonna hop into the Velvet Underground, but first I'm going to hop in, grab some records, play a live set for you, and then at the end of it, we're going to talk about all those songs I play again. This is my best friend's older brother works at licorice pizza. Enjoy
