As I mentioned, we're going to be talking about a list written by the founding member of guided by voices. But first we're going to talk a little bit about the band guided by voices itself, guided by voices, is a band formed by Robert Pollard the main creative force behind the band. He's an extremely prolific songwriter having written or co written more than 1600 songs, with over 500 of them released under the guise of guided by voices. The band started in 1987 originally, and still is around today. To give you an example of how prolific they are, the band has over a 3030 studio albums to live albums 12 compilation albums, seven video albums 1980s 39 singles, seven soundtrack albums, six bucks sets to books in the year 2020 alone, kind of by voices has released three albums. They're an unbelievable force of nature. On top of that, there are many other bands that Robert Pollard is formed and still continues with bands like Boston spaceships, or the circus templates or airport five for acid ranch or his own solo albums upon which there are over 22 of those. Like I said, guided by voices is indeed a schizophrenia band, they are hard to pin down and hard to label and that makes them remarkable. hailing from Dayton, Ohio, the band is mostly the project of Robert Pollard, and originally started releasing music I said in 87, but they formed in 1983, with some friends played mostly for beers and kicks over the years members have come and went, but Pollard has been the core creative force for the band for decades. One could call guided by voices experimental indie rock, experimental indie rock, or post punk lo fi buzz, or a number of other things. The band pioneered rock music's dirty lo fi sound in the early 90s, along with groups like pavement and dinosaur Jr. Kind of by voices is characterized by Curt hole punches of punk tunes held together by strong pop sensibilities reminiscent of the British Invasion outfits, like the who were the Beatles. Over the decades, they've opened up to cleaner sounds, but their ethos remain the same. Pollard has enough diversity as a songwriter to be able to write surreal, abstract lyrics that come together for the sake of the sound, but then also produce songs that have an amazing lyrical clarity envision the band arguably best album, The heralded indie milestone v thousand is hard hitting intensive at the same time. Let's talk about the ABCs of guided by voices. Just to give a give you a little background on that, because I find when I talk about guided by voices, individuals are either in love with the band, or people have no idea who they are. And I'm fixing to change that today with a list that Robert Pollard wrote to give you a little guiding light to who this band is and what brought them to be the great band that they are today. So the ABCs of guided by voices right as for alcohol, of which guided by voices consumption is heroic. B is for B thousand the 1994 album.by. Many to be guided by voices Best Album, certainly the one that put them on the map and came in still contains many live staples in the love tunes. See us for the classic lineup. It's Pollard, of course on vocals, the ones read locked in chain smoking Mickey Mitchell on guitar, the visual artist and songwriter Tobin sprout also on guitar, the striped pant clad Greg demos on bass and the bass heavy. Kevin Finnell on drums. This incarnation existed from 1993 to 96, and then they reunited from 2010 to 2014. D is for Dayton, Ohio, their hometown and source inspiration for innumerable songs. He is for echoes mirin, described by Pollard as a victory song about finding recognition after having persevered as an artist for so long. That's a big part of the guided by voices story. And it's a must have felt great for singing that in 1994 singing we're finally here. And shit.

So as you know, Rolling Stone magazine has this list right, the greatest 500 albums of all time, and they reach out to a bunch of different people like Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger, Brian Wilson, and they asked them, hey, what are some of your favorite albums? What are your top hundred albums? What are your top 500 albums? What are your top 50 albums? And one of the people they asked was Robert Pollard himself. Hey, Robert Pollard put here top 50 albums, and this is Robert Pollard's top 50 albums, but very much a sign into what was going to make guided by voices guided by voices when you hear this live set of music that I'm going to play for you. You can hear guided by voices in those songs if you're familiar with them, I will interweave for guided by voices songs in throughout this set. I'll talk about all of those songs at the end. But you'll be able to I think tied together hearing these songs hearing the who and the Beatles and hearing rocky Erickson and Pink Floyd and hearing sparks and hearing all these sort of connections in the pop sensibility and the hooks and everything that make guided by voices. I think it's a fascinating way to connect, guided by voices to their inspirations. I love it and I was very inspired by it. On the show notes for this and any of your podcast software, I will put a link to this list so you can see the top 50 list. he popped a piece of paper into a typewriter and click clack clack clack physically typed away a list and mailed it off to Rolling Stone magazine I have a picture of that list and it will be posted online.
